DODGERS SIGN THREE-YEAR SPANISH
BROADCASTING AND MARKETING DEAL
WITH LIBERMAN BROADCASTING INC.
KHJ/La Ranchera to become new Spanish-radio home of the Dodgers in 2008
LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that they have signed a fully-integrated marketing and broadcasting deal with Liberman Broadcasting Inc., according to Dodger Chief Operating Officer Marty Greenspun. The deal is believed to be the first-of-its kind for any sports franchise and will make KHJ/La Ranchera 930 AM the new Spanish-language broadcasting home of the Dodgers and provide the club with marketing tools on four top-rated local radio stations and one local television station.
"We are thrilled to be starting a partnership of this nature with Liberman Broadcasting," said Greenspun. "Not only will our fans continue to get the same quality broadcast for all Dodger games that they have come to expect, but we're now able to reach out to a huge audience through new marketing and media opportunities."
The three-year contract will take effect at the beginning of the 2008 season and grants KHJ exclusive Spanish-language radio broadcast rights. In addition to broadcasting all 162 regular-season games, the top-rated AM station in Los Angeles will carry eight Spring Training games, including the annual Freeway Series and provide pregame and post-game coverage during all regular season contests.
"Everyone at Liberman Broadcasting is excited to be embarking on this exciting and new relationship with the Dodgers," said Lenard Liberman, Executive Vice President of Liberman Broadcasting Inc. "While we will be airing the Dodgers live on our highly rated radio station, KHJ-AM, this relationship goes much beyond such broadcasts. We are committed to working with the Dodger organization and featuring the team and its players on our various FM radio stations in southern California and on our highly rated television station, KRCA-TV. My father first began airing the Dodgers on his Spanish radio stations in the 1970s and we are proud to rejoin the team as its media and marketing partner. The Dodgers are the #1 organization in baseball, so it is fitting that they air on the #1 AM radio station in Los Angeles."
KHJ/La Ranchera's signal covers all five counties in Los Angeles and is the home of legendary on-air personalities Humberto Luna and Jaime Piña. Joining those names will be Hall of Fame broadcaster Jaime Jarrín, who will be entering his 50th season in the broadcast booth for the Dodgers and Pepe Yñiguez, who will be entering his 10th season behind the mic for Los Angeles . Former Dodger All-Star pitcher Fernando Valenzuela provides analysis alongside Jarrín and Yñiguez for more than 100 games each season.
"This is a very exciting time for the Dodgers and our fans," said Jarrín. "With a stronger signal and all of the stations in the Liberman media group, we are able to reach so many more Spanish-speaking fans and better serve our audience. We have enjoyed our many years with KWKW, but we have also worked with Jose Liberman before and we know this will be the renewal of a wonderful relationship."
The new deal includes marketing and media campaigns on KHJ/La Ranchera 930 AM, KBUE/Que Buena 105.5/94.3 FM, KWIZ 96.7 FM and KRQB 96.1. It also calls for a television commercial campaign with product placement in local programming on KRCA-62, one of the three top-rated Spanish-language television stations in Los Angeles .
KHJ/La Ranchera becomes the fourth Spanish-language radio home of the Dodgers since the team moved to Los Angeles . The Dodgers became the first team in Major League history to have a bilingual broadcast when its games were aired on KWKW 1330, which retained Spanish-language broadcast rights until 1972 and again from 1987 through this season. From 1973-78, games were aired on XEGM and from 1979-86, the games were on KTNQ 1020.
